Hello to all new students and a warm welcome to TLK and your studies at Arcada!

Tekniska Läroverkets Kamratförbund r.f., or TLK, is the association for all engineering students at Arcada. TLK was founded in 1917 to promote camaraderie among students at Tekniska Läroverket in Helsinki, and is active to this day. TLK organizes many versatile events for its members and friendly associations, and we have several sub-clubs with more specific activities for those who are interested. A TLK member can be recognized by their blue overalls with the TLK logo in white on the back.

TLK welcomes you into the camaraderie, the tutors are eager to accompany you in the beginning of your studies and student life.

What is a tutor?

The tutors are older students whose task is to help and support you in everything related to your studies and student life, as well as other questions and concerns you may have. The tutors can help with things like accommodation, Arcada’s tools and services, courses, events and the best way to handle lectures the day after. You will see the tutors on campus in purple t-shirts and association overalls during the intro days and will see them at the latest when we come to introduce ourselves during the introduction days. We will be visible and make sure you can find us easily.

As an information channel, TLK uses Signal. Below is the link to download Signal, the class chats will be created in early August. The group also includes your major-specific tutors.

To keep in touch with your classmates & tutors and to get information about current events, we have group chats for each class. We also have a Gulis group chat for all the TLKompis of your year.

Do not hesitate to ask questions of the tutors, either in the chat or privately, they are always there for you. We have all started studying at some point and it can be difficult at the beginning to navigate through studies and student life. The tutors also have to uphold professional secrecy, so you can always talk to a tutor (or another TLKompis) if you have something on your mind.

TLK MEMBERSHIP

You can get your TLK membership here!
Membership can be obtained for one year or for your entire study period, at the price of €5 for one year or €20 for the entire study period.
You receive the same benefits whether you are a yearly member or a full-study member, but as a full-study member, you also get a nice membership card! (And if you end up studying longer than the planned 4 years, as sometimes happens, it’s even more financially beneficial!)

CORNERN

Cornern is TLK’s living room and office. Cornern is located on Romgatan 5, which is about 100m in front of Arcada’s main entrance. At the entrance, it says ”CORNER” on the window and has TLK’s logo on the glass door.

At Cornern, you can hang out with other TLK-ers, cook, print, play on various gaming consoles, borrow sports equipment, try on overalls as well as buy songbooks and overall patches.

Cornern’s official open hours are Monday at 12-15 & Thursday at 16-19.

Between these times, you can use CornerCam to see if anyone is there.

THE CLUB HOUSE

TLK has its own event venue at Nilsiänkatu 11-13 in Vallila. There is a lot that happens there during the year; we organize parties, sitzes and association meetings etc. at the Club House.

Like Cornern, the Club House should feel like a home for the TLK-er. Keep an eye on the association’s contact channels to keep up with what is and when it is happening at the venue!

SUB-CLUBS

A sub-club is a club run by TLK members who want to organize or engage in more specific activities. Members have the right to start their own clubs and apply for club funding from TLK. As a member, you have the right to join all sub-clubs.

LAN Club

The LAN Club is TLK’s oldest active club, having started its activities back in 2010.
The club organizes LAN parties for students four times per school year and has arranged excursions with its members to events like Assembly LAN, which takes place during the summer and winter.

LAN Club begins its 15th operational year with season 15 this fall! Keep an eye out for more info on the LAN Club’s website and Discord.

HEET

HEET stands for Helsinki Energy Engineering Technology Club.
We primarily function as a club for Energy and Environmental Technology at Arcada.

Our goal is to unite students, create connections between students and the professional world, and act as a liaison between students and the school.

We work closely with both students and the school. We hope that this can enable the best and most up-to-date education possible, both now and in the future.

We strive to create as many corporate connections as possible to facilitate internships, summer jobs, etc. This makes recruitment easier for companies, as we already have the contacts and the best ways to reach students within the target group.

Sport Club

The Sport Club engages in various forms of sports. At Cornern, members can also use the club’s equipment, such as basketballs, footballs, and tennis rackets.

Traditional Games Corner, or TGC, is a club for everyone who wants to play traditional board games with others.
Every Tuesday evening, we gather to play everything from Monopoly to Dungeons & Dragons!

Sauna Society

The Sauna Society was founded at the end of 2022 when electricity prices rose and Majstranden stopped its jogging tours.
The club’s purpose is to promote camaraderie within the association through sauna baths and other related activities.
For a small semester fee, we offer sauna sessions almost every week. Additionally, we organize excursions to different saunas.

Technical Brewing Club

Our main goal is to unite people who share a love for brewing and create a place where everyone feels welcome, whether they are beginners or have experience in the brewing world.

TLK organizes several annual ”sitzes” and events, such as:

The association’s parties and events are typically held at TLK’s Clubhouse, located at Nilsiägatan 11-13 in Vallila, or at the Cor-House. The events are open to members, and we strive to organize diverse events that appeal to everyone, regardless of alcohol preferences or personal interests.

Information about TLK’s events is spread through all communication channels, so keep an eye on them for details about upcoming events!
First up is the Beerpong Championship on September 6th!
TLK kicks off the sitz season with the Crayfish Party on September 21st!
For you freshmen, don’t miss out on the TLK Freshman Initiation & Sitz on October 5th!

OVERALLS

The overalls are the ultimate uniform for all TLK members! You have the opportunity to try on and order an overall at Cornern! Cornern’s opening hours are Mondays from 12:00 to 15:00 and Thursdays from 16:00 to 19:00.

The overalls are ordered via Kide.App and are expected to arrive at the end of November or beginning of December.
The deadline to order your overall is September 20th!

We hope you will create many (un)forgettable memories in your own overall!

THE ANNUAL BALL

The absolute highlight of the year takes place on the first Saturday in March, and that’s when the annual ball happens! The annual ball is the biggest and most significant event of the year. TLK’s annual ball is also famously affordable for TLK members.

The annual ball is open to all TLK members, whether you’re a freshman or a senior student. Representatives from TLK’s partner associations, alumni, and students from other schools and organizations also attend the event.

TLK’s next annual ball, TLK 108, will take place on March 1, 2025.

The annual ball doesn’t come alone; from February 24 to March 2, 2025, it’s annual ball week! During the ball week, there will be a wide variety of programs to celebrate TLK’s birthday. You can expect everything from karaoke nights at the club to dance rehearsals!

THE ASSOCIATION MEETING

During the school year, an association meeting, also called a monthly meeting, is held every month. During the monthly meeting, current issues within the association are discussed, and you also have the opportunity to provide anonymous feedback on the school’s operations. The board ensures that all feedback collected at the association meeting is forwarded to the school’s administration.

The association meeting is open to all TLK members. Typically, some refreshments are provided for the participants.

Association meetings are scheduled during the fall semester as follows:

September Association Meeting: 12.9 at 18:00
October Association Meeting: 17.10 at 18:00
November Association Meeting (Election Meeting): 21.11 at 18:00
December Association Meeting (Budget Meeting): 12.12 at 18:00

The November meeting is the Election Meeting, where all functionaries and board members are elected. The December meeting is the Budget Meeting, where the budget for the upcoming operational year is finalized.

THE GULIS CALENDAR

Here is a summary of the most important dates for you as a freshman, along with what you can expect during each day!
Check your program’s schedule during the intro days here!

August 23: Intro day for international students with afternoon mingling.

August 26: Intro Day 1
This is your first day at Arcada, where you will listen to various presentations about the school, your program, and student activities. TLK and the tutors will also introduce themselves during the day.

August 27: Intro Day 2
On the second intro day, you will participate in a campus tour led by the tutors. The tour will cover the most important spots on campus, including TLK’s own club space, Cornern!

September 4: Inauguration
Arcada officially opens its academic year with a formal academic inauguration.

September 11: ASK Gulis Initiation
ASK Gulis Initiation is for all freshmen at Arcada, regardless of program. This initiation is a great opportunity to get to know other students at the university. The initiation involves going through different stations with various challenges, followed by an after-party.

September 24-27: ASK Gulis Sitz
What is a sitz? A sitz is a seated dinner with lots of singing and merriment. Come to the ASK Gulis Sitz to get an introduction to the sitz culture at the university.

October 5: TLK Gulis Initiation and Sitz
Now it’s time to get to know your cohort of Werkeiter! During TLK’s gulis initiation, you will embark on an adventure with your friends. The initiation concludes with an amazing sitz at the Clubhouse!
